Exciting News: The Earl B. Gilliam Bar Foundation Receives $25,000 Grant from SDG&E!

The Earl B. Gilliam Bar Foundation is excited to be the recipient of a $25,000 grant provided by SDG&E.  This grant will allow us to continue to diversity the legal community. So many times children are told that they can be anything they want to and be anything they want to be, but what does it say to a child when they don’t see people who look like them in certain professions. Is the message that those professions are unattainable?  Many of us grew up never imagining becoming lawyers because we had never met a lawyer and if we had, not one that looked like us.  We at the Foundation want to change that narrative and increase diversity in legal community.

As a result of this grant, the Foundation was able to create the Inspiring Future Leaders Series.  This program will allow the Foundation to expose students to Black lawyers and introduce the legal field as a viable career option to students of all ages and education levels, from as young as kindergarten.  We believe in order to increase diversity in the legal community, we need to plant the seed in our youth and nurture it, so that as they grow they not only know that they can become lawyers, but they know that they have a community that is here to encourage and support them.  Additionally, the grant award will allow the Foundation to continue to provide financial support to law students, as well as provide them with assistance for the bar examination.

The Foundation also recognizes and values the importance of supporting our young attorneys and we will be able to offer networking opportunities that will ensure employment and mentor opportunities that will enable young attorneys to have the connections, tools and resources needed to excel in the San Diego legal community.

We are excited about this partnership and the impact this grant will have on the San Diego community.  Please be sure to visit our website and follow us on social media to learn more about the Inspiring Future Leaders Series and the other exciting opportunities this grant will allow us to provide.
