BAR SUCCESS SCHOLARSHIP

 

The Earl B. Gilliam Bar Foundation (“EBGBF”) mission is to provide support for diversifying the legal community, which includes scholarship opportunities for law students. The Foundation is committed to increasing the number of students of color that successfully pass the California Bar Exam and subsequently practice law in San Diego County. These scholarship opportunities serve to assist students in adequately preparing for the bar exam.

The Bar Success Scholarship consists of (2) scholarship opportunities. Students may apply for one or both scholarships.

  1. Full course tuition scholarship for deserving law student graduates to participate in the Minority Legal Education Resources’ (MLER) California Bar Process Management Program. For more information, please visit mler.org.
  2. A $1,000 scholarship to offset costs of taking a commercial bar prep program.

 

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants for the MLER TUITION SCHOLARSHIP must meet the following criteria:

  • Must have submitted a 2019 Bar Process Management Program Application through MLER.
  • Must be taking the July 2019 California Bar Exam.
  • Must be registered for a commercial bar preparation program.
  • Must be a 2018 or 2019 graduate of a law school in San Diego County or with ties to San Diego County.
  • African American heritage and/or significant contribution to the African American community.
  • Demonstrate an intent to practice law in San Diego County.
  • Recipients must be willing to meet with the scholarship sponsors.

Applicants for the BAR PREPARATION SCHOLARSHIP must meet the following criteria:

  • Must demonstrate an interest in the practice area of civil rights. Civil rights laws cover the diverse assortment of rights and freedoms recognized and guaranteed every United States citizen and resident by federal, state, and local laws and constitutions.
  • Must be registered for a commercial bar preparation program.
  • Must be taking the July 2019 California Bar Exam.
  • Must be a 2018 or 2019 graduate of a law school in San Diego County or with ties to San Diego County.
  • Of African American heritage and/or with significant contribution to the African American community.
  • Demonstrate an intent to practice law in San Diego County.
  • Recipients must be willing to meet with the scholarship sponsors

 

APPLICATION MATERIALS

Please be prepared to submit the following materials in (1) PDF file:

  1. PERSONAL STATEMENT (500 words maximum): Please explain why you should be awarded a Bar Success Scholarship, how this particular award impacts your personal or professional aspirations, and your involvement with the African American community. You may include information regarding your background, reasons for pursuing further education, challenges you face outside of school, and any other information you would like to have considered by the scholarship selection committee. For Bar Preparation applicants, please also discuss your interest in the practice area of civil rights. The personal statement should be double-spaced.
  2. RESUME
  3. COMMUNITY SERVICE & INVOLVEMENT: Please list any community service, Earl B. Gilliam Bar Foundation or Association, and other San Diego legal events and programs you’ve participated in.
  4. FINANCIAL NEED (100 words maximum): Please provide the total amount of your student loan debt for both undergraduate and law school separately. Please also describe your financial circumstances and how this scholarship will assist you.
  5. LAW SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT (Unofficial permitted)
  6. BAR EXAM REGISTRATION: Please provide proof of registration for the July 2019 California Bar Exam.
  7. BAR PREP COURSE REGISTRATION: Please provide proof of registration for a commercial bar prep program.

 

SELECTION PROCESS

The Bar Success Scholarship award recipient will be selected by a review committee composed of Earl B. Gilliam Bar Foundation Board Members, who will evaluate applicants on the following criteria:

• Academic achievement
• Personal Statement
• Community service, leadership or volunteerism
• Financial need
