Each year, the Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association raises money for scholarships and other community needs.  We want to be sure our many sponsors and others in the community truly understand how deeply important these scholarships are in diversifying the legal community.  Because many students of color come from difficult financial circumstances, these scholarships often help make the difference between focused study that leads to success and fractured study, distracted by the pressures of work and financial stress.  Kim Carter is a successful attorney practicing employment law at Carothers DiSante & Freudenberger LLP and she is a former recipient.  Here she is in her own words:

Attorney Kim Carter – Thomas Jefferson School of Law (’11)

Words cannot express how grateful I am to have received a scholarship from the EBGBA.  Financial assistance from the EBGBA meant the difference between passing the California Bar examination the first time and starting my career, or facing failure and never fulfilling my dream of becoming an attorney.  As a wife and mother of two, I did not have the benefit of taking extended time off of work, paying to take the bar examination more than once, or paying additional bar preparation fees.  I had one shot and it needed to count.  The EBGBA helped me take my shot and allowed me to aim high.  I applied the EBGBA scholarship toward bar preparation fees and I successfully passed the bar examination on my first try.   Thank you EBGBA for trusting and believing in me and helping to make my dreams come true.
